Situated within easy access of the M1 motorway, less than 3 miles from Junction 9, Harpenden Golf Club is very accessible. To the east Junction 4 of the A1(M) is only 8 miles from the club. The course has been on its present site at Hammonds End since 1931 when renowned golf architects of the time Messrs Hawtree and Taylor were engaged to design and build a 7000 yard challenging 18 hole course with piped water to the greens, although this was later shortened as it proved too long for the members with hickory shafted clubs of the time.

In the exhibition match to open the course the newly appointed local professional George Randall played with three of the most famous players of the day, Abe Mitchell, Percy Allis and Arthur Havers. The match was remarkable as the first player on the course, Arthur Havers, had the first hole in one on the then 15th hole, which is now the 8th hole. Today the course measures 6377 yards from the white tees, 6221 from the yellow tees and is a par 70 for men. For ladies it is 5613 yards and a par 72. With a variety of holes where risk and reward need to be taken into account the course provides a challenge and enjoyment for a wide variety of abilities.
